Joyce’s first novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was published in 1916, immediately gaining acknowledgement. It is highly autobiographical, telling about the coming-of-age period of Stephen Dedalus, who was to become one of the central characters of Ulysses.
Joyce was deeply interested in theatre but wrote only one play Exiles, published in 1918. The play is about the relationship of a wife and husband and is connected to the story Dead (from The Dubliners, 1914) and to his great novel Ulysses (1922).
