Following positive reviews and popularized in book clubs, the novel was adapted for a film of the same name.
Dealing with a wide range of issues of religious, political, literary and cultural nature, the novel was a success at the time when the interest towards Afghanistan was particularly high in the USA. Primarily a father-son story, the novel is set against the backdrop of political and social turmoil – from the fall of the country’s monarchy to the Soviet military intervention, ending with the mass exodus of refugees and the rise of the Taliban regime.
