This atlas combines the toponymic maps of one part of Samegrelo, specifically, Abasha, Martvili, Senaki, and Chkhorotsku Municipalities, prepared by the historian and ethnographer Givi Eliava, the founder of the Martvili Museum of Local Lore. This unique material is now preserved at the museum. The author aspired to publish a complete set of toponymic atlases not only of Samegrelo, but of all parts of Georgia, but, unfortunately, he failed to do so.
The book is one of the first examples of publishing toponymic material in this format in Georgian. Publishing toponyms, accompanied by proper mapping, is an original endeavour and will doubtlessly provide practical help for users.
This edition presents toponymic maps as well as a list of toponyms and relevant documentary information. The publication will be of great service to those interested in Georgia’s history, geography, ethnology and Georgian linguistics.
The lists of toponyms appearing in the Appendix to the Atlas were published as individual works during the author’s lifetime: “Toponymy of Abasha and Gegechkori Districts” (1977), “List of toponyms of Chkhorotsku District” (1983), and “Toponymy of Senaki District” (1989). In 2018, the Martvili Museum of Local Lore published toponymic maps of Martvili Municipality, with attached lists and their explanations, celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founder.
However, the toponymic maps of Abasha, Senaki, and Chkhorotsku are published for the first time. Unlike the author’s previous publications, in this atlas both villages and village toponyms are given in alphabetical order.
