In 1902, during his journey to Jerusalem, Niko Marr resided in the Monastery of the Cross and examined the text of “The Life of St. Gregory of Khandzta” by Giorgi Merchule. He prepared it for publication and distribution. However, before its publication, in 1904, Marr also traveled to Shavsheti-Klarjeti, where he explored and described places connected with the life of Gregory of Khandzta. Finally, in the work published in 1911, which is considered one of the peaks of the rich scientific biography of Niko Marr, the following were published: introduction, Georgian text of “The Life of Gregory of Khandzta”, its Russian translation and “The diary about the journey in Shavsheti and in Klarjeti”.
