Ketevan the Martyr – this is how the 17th-century Queen of Kakheti was established
in Georgian consciousness. Her martyrdom was so impressive that, unlike many holy martyrs in Christianity, only Ketevan is mentioned with the epithet “Martyr”.
The work brings together numerous interesting documents and materials about the queen’s active involvement in governing the kingdom, her activities on the diplomatic stage, her attempts to regulate relations with Iran, her captivity, and her martyrdom on 26 September 1624 in Shiraz.
The book-album is richly illustrated with fresco and miniature depictions of the Queen of Kakheti, photographs of places associated with her name, and foreign engravings.
This publication is dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the Martyrdom of Queen Ketevan.
